Three years ago, U-VOL Foundation completed a solar-powered clean water borehole in Ojegbe Village, a rural community in North Central Nigeria. Today, the water is still flowing—proof that sustainable change is possible when communities and partners unite.
This initiative was more than just a well; it became a lifeline. Before the borehole, families, especially women and children, walked long distances to fetch water from unsafe sources, risking their health and safety. Now, thanks to the solar-powered system, Ojegbe enjoys reliable, clean, and eco-friendly water access every day.
Strategically placed near the local primary school, the borehole has transformed the learning environment. Teachers and students no longer miss school to fetch water, and improved hygiene has led to better attendance—especially for young girls, who now have greater dignity and fewer barriers to education.
In February 2025, we returned to Ojegbe with a local media team to listen and learn. Community leaders, school staff, and families shared stories of change:
- Teachers reported increased student attendance and improved hygiene.
- Women described the relief of no longer choosing between sending a child to school or collecting water.
- A village elder told us, “This water has given our children life and our women rest.”
The borehole now serves not only Ojegbe but also neighboring communities, reaching hundreds of people each day. Its solar-powered design keeps maintenance and fuel costs low, ensuring the project remains both environmentally and economically sustainable.
As we prepare to launch our next clean water project—this time beside a rural maternity hospital—we carry these stories with us. They remind us why this work matters and strengthen our commitment to long-term, community-led solutions.
Thank you to everyone who made this project possible. Clean water is not just a resource, it’s a right. Together, we’re transforming lives, one community at a time.
